Individual Evaluation

This is my own personal evaluation on our final piece.

As the sequence starts you see our “HEC Productions” clip which Mr Earl kindly created for us. We felt that by using an original production company instead of using an already existing one it would show how unique we want our film to be.

I feel the first shot is a key shot as it gives the audience an idea of what the film is based on. The fact the camera is positioned behind Callum’s character and is focusing on him “shooting up” shows the audience that the main focus of the films is drug abuse.

This shot really sets the scene as the framing means there is no need for any camera movement so the audience can focus on one shot and take in the whole setting. I think the gravestones in the foreground are very well placed within the shot as they are very prominent yet when the focus is on Callum’s character they don’t interfere. The flowers were very important in this shot as the connotations they carry, love and respect, emphasise how Callum’s character feels about the death of his girlfriend.
The voice over tells the audience the storyline whilst the music in the background sets the mood very well. I think these two components coupled together are very effective in creating empathy for the character as he is visiting a grave, and by his body language shows he is clearly very upset.

This shot is very believable as we used a real kitchen and real props whilst filming, for example the bowls of food, which really helped the believability as we didn’t need to change anything, it was already as a normal kitchen would be. We edited this shot a lot compared to the rest as we felt to create the idea that it was a memory it would have to be hazy or fuzzy. We did this by using the “roughen edges” effect and I feel it worked really well! Also, the black and white effect adds to the look of a memory as it appears older than it would in colour. The date in the bottom right corner is a very important part of the shot as it shows the time periods have changed. We added this as it was confusing that the female character was dead in the first part then alive again, I think it definitely cleared up the confusion.
Callum found it quite hard to act to a script so he and Hannah just followed the basic guidelines and said what felt right to them which really worked for this conversation as it made it far more believable than when they were using a script.

As the conversation became more serious as Hannah’s character mentioned drugs we decided to start using shot reverse shot to show the conversation which was very effective as it showed the emotion and reactions of both characters. This part of the film was crucial in showing how drug users can be within any stereotype, not just “hoodies”. The fact they are a couple and one abuses heroin whilst the other has never used it before shows how not all teenagers are drug users and how just because Callum’s character does drugs doesn’t mean Hannah’s character should be doing drugs too.

I really like this shot as it carries on from the first shot in the graveyard and shows how the previous scene was a memory. I like how the music starts from where it left off again which also emphasises the idea of the memory. The date in the corner is shown again to stop confusion between the time periods. This shot also shows the regret Callum’s character is feeling as his body language shows he is upset as he is hunched over and has his hood up. Unfortunately when we filmed this shot we thought we would be able to edit the gravestone to a different date of birth so it fitted with the age of Hannah’s character however we were unable to do so but felt you couldn’t really see the date anyway so it wasn’t a massive mistake.

Overall I feel our project was a success and although there were a few issues I really enjoyed created the opening sequence and I think in the end we created a much better sequence than we thought we possibly could.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

As I didn’t make much contribution to the editing of the preliminary task I feel I have learnt just how much work, time and effort is needed to ensure a high standard. I also think because we had to write our own script and come up with an idea from scratch rather than just act and film what we were told to, made it a lot harder as it meant we all had to agree on the same thing. At times it proved difficult to reach an agreement however we managed to get through and complete our project.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I’ve learnt how hard it is to ensure continuity and realism within a film. When one little thing is different you have to shoot the scene all over again and it takes so much time overall to get all of the clips together. Also, editing takes far longer than I expected as once you have edited, it may not be how you first thought it would be and therefore if you don’t think it is good enough you have to keep editing to make sure it is perfect. I have also learnt if you want big effects you have to spend a lot of money which we obviously didn’t have to use so our project didn’t look as professional as we’d hoped.

How did you attract/address your audience

Our project shows the real life issues of some drug using teenagers in the UK as it almost defends their drug use and doesn’t discriminate them because of it. However it also shows the danger of drugs and how serious the consequences can be. We feel this will appeal to our target audience as we ourselves are within the age group and we felt it was a good plot for a film so hopefully others of our age would too.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our production company “HEC” would distribute our media product as we feel this would be the easiest and cheapest way to do it, rather than pay another company to do it for us.

Who would be the target audience for your media product?

I think the target audience is either gender, and in the 15-26 age group. This is because we believe our film would be classified as a “15” and therefore no younger could see it. I think 26 would be the top end of the target audience as not many people older than that will be interested in the story of a teenage drug addict.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our project represents drug users however not in the stereotypical view that all drug users are “scruffy” or “chavs”. The way our characters dress would have them labelled as “normal” and definitely not “chavs”. The only time within the sequence either of the characters could show part of the stereotype  is when Callum is walking to the gravestone with his hood up, however this was only done to show the regret and remorse his character was feeling at the time.

How does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our project challenges the stereotype that drugs are only used by “chavs” and shows that “normal” people also use drugs. By having a couple in which one person does drugs and has for a long time, and the other has never done drugs before, it shows the contrast between two people who otherwise are very close. I feel we also challenged the stereotype of teenagers being violent and irresponsible as we see when the male character visits the grave of the female character.

Evaluation

Today I am preparing my answers to the evaluation questions. Once they are finished they will be posted on my blog.

Final Video

This is our finished sequence.

Tonight

Myself and Hannah stayed behind after school for 2 hours as the final touches and rendering we did at dinner didn't save. Therefore when we came back we had to re-do all the work we did during the lesson and render and export our project. Thankfully after 3 attempts we have finally managed to export our project.

Final day!

Our project has to be in today and all we have left to do is add credits. After we have done this we are going to export our project ready to hand in. Fingers crossed all goes to plan.

Rendering

Today Hannah has set our sequence rendering as we have all the effects added to our videos that we want. After rendering we plan to watch our video through to make sure it look professional. The final thing we need to do is add the credits and ensure our video runs smoothly and is a believable opening sequence. We are definitely on track to meeting the deadline.

Gravestone

Today I edited the picture of the gravestone Callum is visiting.

This is the gravestone before I edited it. This would make Hannahs character 71 when she died which obviously isnt true as the storyline suggests she dies soon after taking heroin when she was young.

This is the gravestone after I edited it. Now it says Hannahs character was 21 when she died which is much more believable and fits with the storyline.

In the end we didnt use the still shot of the gravestone anyway.

Today

Today we edited the clip by taking out the inter-titles to make our sequence look less like a trailer and more like the opening of a movie. We then replaced the inter-titles with a voice over with some background music which was so much more effective. We also added dates at the start of each scene because our sequence changes between different times of the year so hopefully this has made it more clear. Also, we made the conversation, which is in the past, in black and white with a rough border around it. Hopefully this will also help distinguish between the past and present.

Progress

Today we changed the order of our sequence around to see if it would be more effective in a different order. We decided it looked better when we had moved it around so we are going to stick with this order. Also, we thought the titles we are using made the sequence look like a trailer so we are going to try and find a way to use the voice over we originally wernt going to use to make it less like a trailer and more like the opening sequence to a film.

Music

Oliver managed to create the music last night so today myself and Hannah tried to add the music to the video however when we added it, it said there was no audio on the track. Therefore we are going to try to fix this at a later date. Tonight we are shooting a few more clips that we realised we needed after we did our rough cut.

Music

We realised that our film opening lacked  a mood so we have asked our friend, Oliver, to create a piece of music that will set the mood. By asking our friend to do it, it means we dont have the issue of copyright and we can make it exactly how we want it. Hopefully this will be done by Monday

More problems

Unfortunately we wernt able to film our last few shots at the weekend as we didnt have a camera. We have planned to film them tomorrow afterschool in the dining hall. This means we will have to edit the script slightly to fit our scene. Hopefully no more problems will arise and we can finally get our final draft finished.

Editing

Today myself and Hannah are rendering our clips. This is going to take the rest of the lesson and most of dinnertime. We will come back at the end of dinner and hopefully they will have rendered. We also plan to come back afterschool and do more editing.

Revised call sheets

As our shooting has been postponed to a later date, we have produced a new call sheet for our actors:

Ident

This is the first thing that will appear on our project as it represents the production company that created our film.

Filming

We have been experiencing many problems with finding time to film our project at a time which is most beneficial to everybody involved and problems with the camera itself. Because of this the earliest we have been able to shoot is tomorrow. Hopefully we wont encounter any problems tomorrow.

Location scouting

During todays lesson we have been looking around school for a good location to film our final project. We found a room (B6a) which is small enough to be used as a students flat, and it already has 2 sofas, a tv and a big poster inside. We thought this was the perfect place to use. We have asked if we can move some props from the common room such as a table and maybe another sofa to make the room even more believable. On Thursday we are going to film and see how it is going to turn out.

At first we thought the common room would be a good place to film
Then we found this room (B6a) and thought it was ideal for our location

First meeting

On Thursday ourselves and the actors have arranged to meet after school to film the house party scene. I think this is going to be difficult to pull off as we are filming in school, and we wont be able to bring any props in such as alcohol and other typical house party props. However we are going to do our best with what we have and if we cant make it look realistic, we can rearrange another time to try and film a more believable house party scene.

The Script

Following is the script that Hannah wrote, I will create a storyboard once the script is more detailed and describes each scene thoroughly.

The opening scene of our opening movie sequence will start off with the title of the movie. However this we have not yet decided and we will need to sit down at a later point after filming our clip and decide this with one another based on the footage that we have shot. As the film is based on teen movies and we have done an extensive amount of research on opening sequences and teen movies themselves. We have all done our own individual research over the Christmas holidays and this has contributed to each of our research making us all have the best chance for getting the best marks for our research part of the coursework. Thought the lesson today myself and callum wrote down all of the things which we need to do to complete our allocated tasks on time. Between us in the lesson we produced a call sheet and a rough plan of action of all of the things we needed to do. We then allocated certain tasks to individual people in our group so that the work load would be equal and we had a better chance of completing all of our tasks on time.

As our script is about teenagers and their lifestyles at university we will have to show all aspects of their lifestyles. for example we need to give people an insight into the lives of the youth of today but not perceive it or show it in a negative way. We need to show the viewers of our clips that not all teenagers are alcohol sex craving youngsters and that some have a sensible head on their shoulders. As young people of our generation (90's) have such a bad reputation with the press and other media aspects we thought that it would be a good idea if we projected and showed the good qualities of youngsters as well as their party loving life styles. This way people will get an insight into our lives rather than just believing things that we are perceived to be in the media.

The script
The scene will take place in a small room. this will be the room that all of the people living in flat B6a use as their living room. The basic line of the story goes that one of the characters Russell decides to invite a few girls back to the apartment for a drink. However when the girls realise that he takes drugs and this may rub off negatively on them they decide to leave the party, until a few of their other friends from university show up. As Miranda and Kadance enter the room with their male friends and a few others Russell decides not to take the drugs and puts them to one side so that he can just enjoy a normal night of casual drinking with his friends. However as the people that just entered the flat with Miranda and Kadence did not know that they were drugs of a higher class they decided to drop a few into one of the girls drinks to try and get her to sleep as she was being such a pain. However they did not realise that this may cause potential problems. As the night goes on events happen and we want to capture the good and bad things that these Teens will do. We want to show their wild side but also their sensible and sensitive sides. So we are planning to film them being wild then sensible. The story line will include no dialogue as of such and positioning of characters will be decided on the day so that the 'party scene' looks authentic and real. But none the less we will still use all of the necessary camera shots and editing skills to achieve the highest possible grade we are capable of.

to capture each individual characters emotions and feelings at the certain highs and lows of the party we have decided to freeze frame and edit the shot to introduce each individual character to the viewers. We believe that this will be a positive way of showing everyone the good and bad signs to the youths of today. we got most of our ideas and inspiration from the things we looked at in our research. For example skins, misfits, this is England 86, kidulthood and adult hood. but the main inspiration came from a clip what we were given to analyse for our other media task. the clip was from hollyoaks later a few years ago and details and shows everything we are aiming to achieve but from a different angle . so we are using this as a guide to produce our work for this task.

Call Sheets

This is the call sheet for all actors, it tells you the name, contact number, meeting place and meeting time. It also shows a picture of each actor for added detail.

This is the call sheet which will be attached to the individual call sheet, it gives an overview of the time and place of the production.
This is an example of an individual call sheet, it tells the actor about their character and what requirements they will have to perform to.

Research - The Hangover

The Hangover

At the beginning of The Hangover, there is a conversation between two people about something that has happened and gone wrong. This gives the viewer almost a sample of what is going to happen. We then see credits and a series of shots around Las Vegas which set the scene. Once the credits have finished, a scene begins which is said to be “two days earlier”. From here the story then carries on until the beginning scene is repeated later in the film. At this point the repeated scene makes sense to the viewer. I thought this was a very good way to start the film as instead of the story starting in chronological order, a small clue was given as to what would happen which can make the viewer imagine different scenarios.

At various parts of the film, usually after something funny or unusual has been said, it is followed by a song. For example:

I thought this was a very good way to add attitude to the scenes and it also made it easier to change from one scene to another. This might be a good idea for our production as we aren’t as good at editing as we’d like to be, so this idea may help our production to run smoothly.

At the end of the film, a camera is found with pictures of the previous night. The main characters look at the pictures. We then go to the end credits where the pictures are shown. I thought this was a good way to end the film as it doesn’t just end suddenly.
